Vortex

Vortex

A generative site-specific installation for the unique architecture of the Darwin Ecosystem Project.
Permanent architectural light sculpture

Vortex is a site-specific, interactive light sculpture designed for the footbridge of the Darwin Ecosystem Project in Bordeaux, a hub for sustainability and urban innovation. Created by 1024 architecture, the installation merges environmental design with real-time data visualization, transforming architecture into a living, reactive system.

Constructed from scaffolding wrapped in raw wood, Vortex highlights its structural geometry with 12 integrated LED light strips that accentuate the bridge’s architectural lines. What sets this installation apart is its responsive functionality: connected directly to the site’s energy data systems, Vortex translates fluctuations in energy consumption into flowing, luminous sequences.

The result is a continuously evolving light organism, whose pulses mirror the vitality and ecological rhythm of the Darwin site. More than a visual spectacle, Vortex embodies a sustainable approach to public art, where technology, architecture, and environmental awareness come together in a poetic expression of place-based intelligence.

By bridging the gap between urban infrastructure, interactive media, and ecological consciousness, Vortex invites passersby to witness the invisible energies of the city as a dynamic and ever-present flow of light.
